Volunteering at a Dinosaur dig

The annual dig at the Flat rocks site near Inverloch in Victoria has been taking place since 1994 and more than 12,000 fossil bones have been catalogued in that time.

Applications for the Dinosaur Dreaming 2010 field season closed at the end of September 2009. More than 40 new applicants applied and attended the information and interview session at the Museum Victoria’s Discovery Centre on October 3rd. The successful applicants were then invited to attend a field trip on the coast, near the Otway Lighthouse, at a site where a partial dinosaur skeleton was found in 2005.

A limited number of applicants will be invited to take part in the Dinosaur Dreaming 2010 field season. We would like to thank everyone who applied to be part of the Dinosaur Dreaming project. To those people who missed out this year, we hope they will think about applying again in the future.

Each year up to 60 volunteers from all over the world travel to Inverloch to take part in the annual excavations. It is an amazing experience and many volunteers return year after year to help.

The dates for Dinosaur Dreaming 2010 are 30th January to 27th February inclusive. The crew will be at the Flat Rocks site on most days, depending on the tide and the weather. Visitors to the site are welcome but are unable to participate in the excavations as trained eyes are necessary to spot the fossil bones.
